My First DD

Paris Gargoyle 2 by Phil-Norton
My First DD on here! many thanks to ILTBY for suggesting it, and many thanks to all who have made comments, all very much appreciated. To answer a few questions, the angle of the shot is easy to get, its actually on one of the public walkways around the Cathedral. I wanted the image to have a gothic feal to it, hence the toned mono and vignette. It was important to have the Eiffel tower on the horizon so the gargoyle looks like the guardian over the city. Or depending on your view, the scourge of the city ;-)
Again many thanks to all!

An Iconic Monument, I really wanted to get a shot that was different. Whilst wandering around avoiding the street sellers with their crappy plastic illuminated statues (I bought one for my son) I noticed seagulls flying overhead. So, alot of patience and shot paid off with the feathered fiend captured in just the right spot to balance with the tower. The image was shot in Raw and then processed in Lightroom with one of my own presets. Two copies were exported (one with correct exposure, another with vignette and dark tomes enhanced) and blended to keep the subtle tones. I prefer to blend two copies (using masks as in the tutorial) because it gives more control and allows me to emphasise the atmosphere as I saw it on the day.

Lytham St Anne, nr Blackpool on the West Coast www.multimap.com/s/yEuLDUh1. I was passing so hoped to get some long ex shots of the sea, but found the tide was out. I mean OUT! I guessed about a mile, I could barely see it! So after a while I found this bizzare platform, used by boats to moore out at sea, it must be 1/4 mile out. It was a strange experience, standing so far out on a huge sand bank, bareley being able to see the sea, with such an odd almost alien structure, and the wind howling around me with such power. the wind created a sand storm that only extended inches above the ground. If you look closely at the sand near the horizon its blurred...thats the sand rushing as fast as the clouds! It made me dizzy..if you ever stand in the sea when its rushing out, and feel disoriented...it was the same. Altogether a surreal day, a great exilerating experience, and I felt so alive. Hope the images capture the magnificence of the scene.

Another shot using the B+W ND filter. I went to the coast not far from where I live, to a place called Hornsea, and managed to get a few shots, this being my fav because I like the simplicity of the scene. Again it wasnt easy, having to carry heavy kit down lots of rocks, setting up, deciding correct exposure, multiplying it to account for a 10 stop filter and polariser, setting to bulb, manual focus..and all the while running from the sea! My tripod was 12" under water. Eventually I gave up and just stood there getting wet. Imagine the strange looks I got from people on the beach. It was worth it though. Still a few errors on this image, ISO 200 is too high, so hopefully on Sunday I will be back at the coast and will try some other shots.

Shot yesterday, I wanted to try out my shiny new B+W ND 110 filter, 10 stops, yes 10! I didnt have time to go out, so I set up in my back garden. I metered without the filter, multiplying it by 1000, and was getting exposures of 600 seconds! Hmmm...iso was low and aperture was f16. So I figured after watching the clouds I wanted an exposure of about 60 secs....so ISO 200 and f/8 gave me just that! Then my shots all came out black! So after much puzzlement, annoyance and messing around, guess what? I set the camera onto bulb, set the remote release....and forgot to check the manual aperture which was still on f/20. Doh....so then I got what I think is a great atmospheric shot :-)

Portugal, late July 08. Sometimes its difficult carrying gear around on vacation, especially when its busy. I'd been using my G9 most of the time but really wanted to get some shots with the 5D, os one morning I got up early and headed off to the beach, the sun was low casting that early morning glow, and I was rewarded with one solitary figure walking along the beach. The polariser helped keep detail in the sky, and I stopped highlights blowing out by under-exposing 2/3's. Contrast was added back in with CS3 curves. And yes the water was freezing!

Paris Gargoyle 2 by Phil-Norton
We decided to go to Paris for 4 nights because we deserve it, so whilst there I got some shots. Most were typical tourist shots I needed for the stock library Im working with now, but I managed to get a few shots I really wanted for myself, the Tower as has to be done, and a few of the Gargoyles looking over the city from Norte Dam. Ok its a shot that has been taken 1000 times, but I just had to try my own take on it, with a vignette (I so love) and muted tones. Worked quite well I hope!

Hospital</u>-24 Nov 08
Well, I've not been online much for a week again. Last Sunday at 6am I had a slight pain in my abdomen, nothing serious. I was up at 9, and by 9.30 was on the floor in agony! Later at the hospital, and being dosed up to the eyes in Morphine, I was told I had a Kidney Stone! The pain was unreal and I won't describe what I went thru. But to alleviate the boredom I managed to get my laptop smuggled in and produced some more PS Tutorials. Appologies for any errors, but hey, I was stoned on Morphine. I still have the stone, but no pain. Next week Im back to have it sonic blasted to history. I hope!.

Stupid People</u>-15 Oct 08
Urban Landscape 1 by Phil-Norton
There's a funny story behind this series of images shot yesterday. Whilst driving past Birmingham on the M6 I saw this gas tower. I wanted to get a few shots so went on the hunt. It was in a very industrial area, and luckily I found a car park that gave me a great vantage point. Now I knew the car park was private, but thought hey, what harm is there. So imagine, a guy dressed in suit, and FOUR guys behind him come marching up to me very threateningly muttering "private...what you doin?" (I was holding my 5D with a huge white 100-400mm..duh!). I explained and showed him, he muttered "err....oh.....private!", "yes but its just a picture and its not even your gas tower, do you really mind?"...."err..." (scratches thick skull) "no....but its private!" Jeez...but I carried on and got my shots :-)

You Can, Can Canon?</u>-1 Oct 08
Its here, after almost a year waiting! The new 5d11, and its looking awesome but what about the specs? www.dpreview.com/previews/cano… So far there are lots of moans and groans about it being an evolutionary upgrade, not revolutionary, and dubious comments about the addition of HD Video. Granted I may play with it, and then forget it, but it may be a nice feature. The upgrade in MP from12 to 21 some are saying is an attempt to win the MP war, but what about the ability to crop more? Most people moaning about it were looking for a 1DS111, but that’s not going to happen. As it is, with 21MP, live view, anti dust, extra sealing, highlight tone priority, ISO 100-6400, Digic 4, new custom modes on the dial and the  3.0" 920,000 dot LCD monitor to name but a few its already an awesome update. I cant wait because a better monitor, better sealing and anti dust would have been enough for me. The 5D is a great camera, with a stunning sensor and a build that just inspires confidence.

But…..I will wait for tests that put the sensor through its paces. The existing 5D sensor has a renowned and respected ability to handle dynamic range and noise at high ISO, so this must be improved or at very least maintained. If it is then Canon will still the march again from Nikon, who of late have been wiping the floor with Canon. But they still don’t have L glass no matter what they do ;-) If the sensor is not as good, I will stay with my 5D, its not the equipment, its what you do with it!

Image 1 "One of my earlier square crop b/w waterscapes. Shot on a very special evening with amazing light. To me, the composition here is probably perfection. The curves, the lines throughout the image just works wonderfully together. The way the clouds and the reflection of them on the water forms arrows leading you deeper into the frame. I like to use "invisible" lines in my photography to form connections between items in the frame. I think this is one of the most important things in photography. Compositional lines..."
Image 2 "Definately not one of my most popular shots, but nevertheless, a shot that means much to me personally. Shot in Lofoten (northern Norway) on a rainy late August morning. The light that got through the thick layer of clouds illuminated the scene in such a great way. Especially on the mountainside in the distance. The feeling of being so close to the elements, so far north in the world was just spectacular. Again, you'll see lines (I hope) connecting the beach, the rocks, the clouds (rain) and the mountains. Strong diagonal lines is always something I try to find and use. Also, this is probably one of the more decent shots I got out of Summer 2008."
Image 3 "Another square crop. This time in color. A great shot I think and it portrays the magic of natural lighting. This is what you get when you keep visiting the same location over and over again. In the end, you get what you've dreamed about. Marvellous light coupled with the drama of the fast-moving clouds, the ice breaking up. Spring. One of the two great times of year (together with fall). Clear, cold air is almost always the best to shoot under. Optimal conditions."

Bio

me

Background
I First became interested in photography at Uni, using a manual Olympus and Mono film. After that I didn’t shoot anymore, not until two years ago. I wanted to do something personal and inspiring, as a break from interior design, so got myself a shiny new Canon 350D.

Inspirations
The coast inspires me hugely. I’ve always had a love for the coast, since growing up there. It’s the drama and the tranquility that captures me, especially on a dark winter day. I look for three main things; composition, drama, and atmosphere. I have an ambition to one day travel the whole UK coast and capture it all. Light and Shadow, and the spaces around a scene are also an inspiration. Sometimes it’s the shadows that create the atmosphere, or an abstract shape that can be powerful and evocative.
Im a huge fan of Black and White photography. The lack of colour creates drama and allows the light, shadow and composition to speak for itself. I'm thinking of starting another site dedicated to just mono.
I'm starting to create Galleries based on “Themes”, the latest being "Gone For A Walk". This is an image collection of bicycles that have been left by the owners. Who are they and where have they gone?
Still Life also inspires me. A simple object like a fire hydrant and take on a life of its own. The colours and textures, composition, light, shadow and atmosphere make a simple scene into something most people totally miss....they just need their eyes opening :-)
I don’t consider myself just a Landscape photographer , there’s so much more.

Post Processing
I use Photoshop and Lightroom for post-processing. I’d never used Photoshop, being a Corel user, but I decided to take the plunge. I only manipulate an image to create a mood, to show what I see. I don’t add things that are not there and try to remain faithful to the scene, although sometimes unwanted debris will be removed. I use curves and levels a lot to add drama and impact, and I love vignettes for the way it can be used to draw the eye into a composition. I explore creative effects to create atmosphere, usually having a good idea of what I want to achieve. A good image should be emotive and tell a story. I will often use a Vignette to darken the edges of an image and hold the attention within the frame. I know, vignettes are bad! But says who?? ;-) I process in Lightroom first with my own  Presets that I’ve built over time, Mono Grunge, Desaturated Punch, Velvia, Lomo, and then finish of in CS3. I think about the image and how it impacted me at the time, and it seems to flow from there.

Ambitions
Travel the whole UK coast and shoot it all.
Travel the world more, building my travel gallery.
Produce a coffee table book of my stuff, just for myself…crazy fulfilling!
Do more candid portraits!
Be a big part of the Da community!

My Gear
All my gear is Canon. I tend to stick with my 5D and 17-40L, 24-105L and a 70-300 which goes onto the 400D. I love wide angles for the way it can create impact with foregrounds.
Canon 5D Body, Full Frame sensor.
Canon 400D Body, Crop sensor.
Both with Grips for the extra batteries.
